Another post that helps you discover the features of the Magento tool. Let’s talk a little bit about the search engine.

Synonyms, are words of the same grammatical category, with a similar meaning and with a different form, that can be interchanged. It is the word that has the same or very similar meaning to another. eg: cat – feline, car – automobile.

SEO, search engine optimization. They are techniques used in the construction of pages to improve their positioning in the search results.

Search Terms

Magento provides a synonym table functionality, known in the Search Terms backend. Although not an SEO technique, this functionality helps to optimize searches within your site. And you can still apply these terms as information tags to be inserted in the product details page for indexing (seo).

A good set of synonyms helps your users find your products more easily, and creates the opportunity to generate more sales.

But what’s the difference?

In the ideal world, its users have impeccable Portuguese and do not make typos, besides having English on the tip of the tongue. Already in the real world, we can analyze reports like this for the word “Mario SAM” people type:

mario san, mario sun, mariosem, mario sam margento, mariosam mageto, powerful master of magento

Regardless of the typo, you want your user to find the related term. If you sell a product “madonna” and the user types “madona“, your system should be smart enough to find what the user wants or not).

Did you mean…

Yes. It’s exactly the same functionality that google offers when you type a “weird” search term. It is based on a synonym table (and relevance). Open your backend and navigate to:

Catalog > Search Terms

A table with query history should be displayed. This table displays interesting results, in addition to the typed term, the number of times it was used, and the number of results displayed to the user. It’s a good way to find out how your customers conduct site searches.

Search Terms

Synonyms in Magento

Still on the search terms page, you can click the “Create search term” button.

Creating Synonym

When you create a new synonym, you enter the word related to the term, the keyword that identifies the term, you can redirect to a specific url, and you can display that new term in your search suggestions in frontend. These settings are at your discretion.

Increase your sales

This functionality is unknown to many users. And it’s a great way to optimize your internal search engine. Where the goal is to facilitate the navigation of your customer, turning that experience into purchase.

Explore this functionality to the fullest.

Success!
