Promotional coupons are a great and powerful marketing tool, used by virtually all major companies (e-commerce and services) – and you know why?
Because it works!
I say this as a customer because several times I took the initiative to buy, by impulse of a promotional code. #whoNever
And with Magento we can enjoy the same tools used by the giants of the market. Let’s see how to create our coupon.
Rules and more rules
In Magento we have the menu option “Promotion Rules“, where it is possible to configure numerous promotional rules, with coupon, without coupon, specific for groups or products, categories, ways of payment, delivery, etc, etc.
So our first step is to define the type of coupon we are going to create.
In this example we will create a $10 coupon that can be used by anyone – but only once.
The idea then would be to send this coupon to a mailing list later – to stimulate the purchase.
Creating the coupon
To get started, click:
Promotions > Promotion Rules [+ Create Rule]
We will fill in the following fields:
Rule Name – For our internal control, to identify the backend.
Description – Optional. If you’d like to quickly remember the rules you’ve created for this promotion.
Status – Active, indicates that the promotion can be used in your store. Inactive, the promotion exists only for your control in backend.
Customer Group – We will usually select all existing groups, but you can select only a few “special” groups.
Coupon – Let’s check the “Specific Coupon” option for a new field to appear on the screen.
Coupon Code – Now we will inform you the code that will be distributed to customers, in this example “BONUS10“.
Coupon Uses – Let’s leave it blank, as the use is unlimited.
Uses per Customer – Here we will mark “1“, as usage is limited to one coupon per customer.
This means that the customer who received the coupon by email can only use the coupon once in his account, but nothing prevents him from distributing the coupon to friends and family members, who in turn use the coupon only once.
Coupon Actions
Now let’s go to the “Actions” menu at the top left of the screen. In this screen we have to worry basically with only two fields, they are:
To apply – Where we will check the option “Fixed discount for the whole cart“.
Discount Value – Where we enter the value “10“, which together with the first field “Apply” indicates that the discount will be $10.
All other fields are optional and you can get more information in the post Pricing Rules – Promotions.
Putting into practice
It’s time to send the email to your customer list, in case your newsletter promotional weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.
My professional software referral for email is for the MailChimp system.
As soon as your customer adds a product to the cart and reports the promotional coupon: BONUS10

Discount Applied
You will receive a discount of $10 applied to the total value of the shopping cart – as shown in the image above.
You should have noticed that Magento inserts the “ Discount Coupon” box automatically into your theme, but if you do not use any strategy associated with promotional coupons, you should delete this “coupon box” – not create false expectations to your customer.
I hope you increase your sales with this strategy.
Success!
